Rafe Judkins on Twitter: New Footage and Q&A!

If you’re a Wheel of Time TV series fan, you must follow Rafe Judkins on Twitter (now X). The showrunner went out of his way to make time for the community and didn’t disappoint this past Thursday, 21 July 2022.

After The Wheel of Time: Origin Stories panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Rafe Judkins took to Twitter to post a behind-the-scenes video for Season 2, confirmed the show for a further season, and answered questions put to him by fans as well.

It marked the end of several months waiting anxiously for news about The Wheel of Time.

With Prime Video understandably sinking its teeth into promoting The Rings of Power, its The Lord of the Rings spin-off show, I wasn’t expecting much from the Comic-Con panel. However, although a release date for Season 2 is still under wraps, we now know that The Wheel of Time is confirmed for Season 3, and more Origins content will be available from August [edit – this didn’t happen!].

That’s huge news, but we also got the behind-the-scenes video and a Q&A session. I’ve commented on my main takes from the Q&A below and summarized all the questions asked and answers given. You can also check out the behind-the-scenes Season 2 video.

Rafe Judkins on Twitter Q&A – Top Takeaways

SPOILER WARNING: Remaining content includes footage and moderate speculation for The Wheel of Time’s second season. Reference is made to characters and events that haven’t appeared in the show yet. Plot references cover the books through to the end of The Dragon Reborn (Book 3). Characters outside of these books are mentioned, but only by name.

The Wheel of Time’s Cold Opens Will Continue

Any of you who have read my reviews for Season 1 will know I’m particularly fond of the cold opens. I’m therefore grateful to @mostlybree, who asked whether the show will be sticking to the “fun cold opens.”

@rafejudkins replied, “Yep! It’s our ode to the out-of-POV chapters in the books, and we will always have them.”

They’ll be there again and for seasons to come. It’s a treat and means my review format should stay intact for the foreseeable future, so whoop!

@dedicatedgrady asked, “Is the Darkfriend Social gonna be on the show?” and Rafe confirmed, “Yep!” I’m delighted to speculate that this will be our first cold open for Season 2.

I suspect the cold-opens will introduce us to the social dynamics of the Seanchan invaders, the Aiel culture, and maybe a fly-on-the-wall insight into plotting by the Forsaken.

Will we revisit the Age of Legends, as we did in the first season’s finale?

The Wheel of Time: Origin Stories may cover most of what we hope to see from that Age in their animated shorts, but we shall see.

What are your predictions for Season 2’s cold opens? Please let me know in the comments.

The Wheel of Time Locations

@crowz92 asked, “Will we see more than one of these cities in Season 2? Cairhien, Tear, Falme?” Rafe didn’t divulge further, except to answer “Yes.”

Cairhien and Falme seem sure from the location shoots I’ve seen. I’m in two minds about whether some of the climactic events at Tear will be moved to Season 3. What do you think?

Rafe confirmed in the Q&A that Season 2 will have 8 episodes but did hint that they might have longer run times.

One thing that doesn’t need any speculation is that the locations will be incredible, wherever they are. Have a watch…

How Many Forsaken?

“Can you tell us how much you will be expanding on the Forsaken in this season?” was @JaredMcNeal3’s question.

@rafejudkins responded, “It’s a big point of difference from the books in S2. We will spend more time with any Forsaken who’s in the show, more how the later books treat the Forsaken than necessarily Books 2 or 3 did.”

I lean into my previous suggestion that the Forsaken may feature collaboratively in the cold opens.

If Season 2 is to avoid going totally random with changes to the plot, Lanfear and Ishamael must be in for sure. It’s a guessing game, but I don’t expect to see Moghedien or Demandred yet. Perhaps it’s wise for Asmodean to make an appearance this season?

If I’m right about Tear, additional Forsaken can be added to set up Season 3. Rahvin and Be’lal (who may end up being combined for the show) make the most sense. Graendal, Sammael, and even Mesaana are all possibilities for me.

Rafe Judkins on Twitter Q&A – Questions Asked

Rafe Judkins poured himself a gin & tonic and declared an Ask Me Anything session on Twitter. These are almost all the questions and the answers we got from Rafe Judkins on Twitter to keep you up to speed.

About the Forsaken & Darkfriends

@dedicatedgrady: Is the Darkfriend Social gonna be in the show?

@rafejudkins: Yep.

@JaredMcNeal3: Can you tell us how much you will be expanding on the Forsaken this season?

@rafejudkins: It’s a big point of difference from the books in S2. We will spend more time with any Forsaken who’s in the show, more how the later books treat the Forsaken than necessarily Books 2 or 3 did.

@AnCaldazar: Blink twice if we see more than 1 Forsaken!

@rafejudkins: [2x relieved face emojis].

About Mat, Gawyn, and Galad

@Graendal12: What’s your favorite scene with Donal Finn, and why is it him blowing the horn?

@rafejudkins: #LetDonalToot is now the rallying cry of a generation.

@Jpcjt1: Which character had his plot changed the most compared to the books?

@rafejudkins: Mat. But we try to bring the characters back to where they should be by the end of S2.

@mike_schaub: Does Mat get to wander the Tower practice yard, and do we learn of Jearom?

@rafejudkins: Get your Origins on!!!

@OhGodItsEss: Please tell us Gawyn won’t be likable, please, please, please, you can’t do this to me.

@rafejudkins: I love every character I write. I think you have to find a way to.

@WoTUp5: I have to ask. Gawyn (and I guess the lesser brother Galad) actually beat Mat in the warder training yard in the show, right? There’s no way they lose on screen, is there?

@rafejudkins: This is an iconic scene from the book, and we are building to a believable version of it in the show. Hopefully. Ha.

About Rand

@nadiattlee: When will Rand’s luscious curly locks return?

@rafejudkins: Ask @joshastradowsk1. He should be growing them now.

@Moonn1949: Does Rand get his Red and Gold outfit this season? I can’t wait to see Josha officially in it.

@rafejudkins: [smiling face with open hands emoji].

About Moiraine & Lan

@memymomonkey: Any hints on Moiraine’s journey in Season 2?

@rafejudkins: It’s much expanded from her Book 2 story. But built out of the core of that and of a couple relationships that were not explored in the books.

@lionesswisd0m: What is the journey like for Moiraine and Lan in Season 2 with their bond still masked?

@rafejudkins: Another big departure point for us from the books is making much more story for Moiraine and Lan. We aren’t sitting these two amazing actors on the bench for a season, so we take what’s in Book 2 for them and expand it in a huge way. That’s all I can say.

About New Cast / Characters

@Ness_bytheloch: What new character/actor are you most excited to introduce us to?

@rafejudkins: There are so many — Aviendha, Elayne, others that have been both announced but not announced, and, of course, Bayle Domon.

@SwartzLuke: Which new cast member gave you the best “Yep! THAT’S _(insert character name)_!” moment in Season 2 filming?

@rafejudkins: I think this moment will be in the first or second trailer of Season 2. It lives rent-free in my mind at all times.

@WotTVSeries: Can you tell us what role Xelia Mendes-Jones will play, please?

@rafejudkins: Xelia is playing the role of knocking their scenes out of the [redacted expletive] park every time they stepped on set.

About Other Characters

@burns_science: Pretty sure I saw Uno in the behind-the-scenes – interested in how that is possible after last season…

@rafejudkins: He’s breathing. Watch close.

@JenIsgro: Will we finally see Steve?

@rafejudkins: How does this only have one like? Most important question.

@GradeKangusBeef: Favorite Season 2 two-person scene with only the character names and no more?

@rafejudkins: Egwene Renna.

@perrintops: Will we get “Do you like to dance, Perrin Aybara?”

@rafejudkins: Yes.

@marisavanzee: Favorite type of gin? And also, can you drop a hint about something you’re looking forward to us seeing in Season 2?

@rafejudkins: Your pic makes me excited about where Liandrin’s character goes in S2. We are so, so lucky to have the amazing @katefleetwood in the show, and you will love, hate, and love to hate her LiLi.

@SnoddyDaniel: How cool was it actually seeing a Fade nailed to a door? Did you pick up a hammer and help mount the fella?

@rafejudkins: I genuinely loved it ha.

@phiswiz: Do the Seanchan still use the ball gags on the Damane?

@rafejudkins: I’ve never seen a ball gag on a damane.

@SilverbowReborn: Hopper?

About The Wheel of Time Season 1

@crowz92: I have a cheat question about Season 1. What was the biggest change in episode 8 that was brought by COVID restrictions compared to what you had originally planned?

@rafejudkins: The thing I like the least was [that] we originally had Egwene using the Wisdom skills she’d learned in the pilot from Nynaeve to help her after the channeling in Fal Dara. But last-minute Covid changes on the day didn’t allow for the same amount of touching, so it got switched, and I [face melt emoji]

@Heron__Marked: Why did you guys decide not to make the dagger instant death like the books? How did Loial survive being stabbed by *the* dagger?

@rafejudkins: That’s a story best told in a stedding.

@NinerAdvocate: Maybe you can open with an explanation of why you had the entire Seanchan ever-victorious navy unleash everything they had on a poor little girl on the beach or how you had the forces of Fal Dara hard charging the BACK OF THEIR OWN DEFENSIVE FORTIFICATION.

@rafejudkins: That girl had it coming. So did the entire coastline and all its cities.

@newt5996: How much has the making of process changed in between seasons, especially with how the pandemic affected Season 1?

@rafejudkins: It’s certainly affected us in ways both huge and small, but by the end of Season Two, it had become so second nature that MULTIPLE TIMES I poured a coffee into my mask and was confused why it didn’t go into my mouth.

About The Wheel of Time Season 2

@Moonn1949: Did everything happen as planned this season, or did you guys have to change anything (as in the last 2 eps of Season 1)?

@rafejudkins: There were unforeseen changes as we shot S2 immediately after wrap of 107 and 108. But that’s making television. Anyone who tells you there weren’t unforeseen changes on their show is lying.

@RodelIturalde1: Which books make it into Season 2?

@rafejudkins: Pieces of 1, 2, and 3.

@CF_Golding: How far into the books will this season take us now the EF5 [Emond’s Field 5] are much more split up than EotW [The Eye of the World]?

@rafejudkins: We are trying to get a fair amount of what’s done in Books 1-3 (large parts still being held for later) by the end of S2 so that S3 can be a much closer adaptation of TSR [The Shadow Rising].

@Phntm888: How many episodes will Season 2 be? If only 8 again, will they be longer?

@rafejudkins: They are longer than [the] first season, but yes, still only 8.

@MaggieMelchior: Since most of the main characters split up geographically at the beginning of tGH [The Great Hunt], will the next season keep them on parallel timelines for a convergence at Falme? In which case, the Portal Stones left a time gap of ~4 months for Rand’s group; easier to do on a page or on film?

@rafejudkins: Time gaps are very difficult moving to the medium of television with the stories intercutting, but we try to do as much as we can to avoid one-hour cross-continent dragon flights.

@crowz92: Will we see more than one of these cities in Season 2? Cairhien, Tear, Falme.

@rafejudkins: Yes.

About The Wheel of Time Season 2 & Beyond

@mostlybree: Are you sticking with the fun cold opens?

@rafejudkins: Yep! It’s our ode to the out-of-POV chapters in the books, and we will always have them.

@Murck82: Will weaves appear the same in the coming season(s)? Congrats on S3 btw!

@rafejudkins: They’re getting a bit of a revamp for S2. Threads and colors and bears, oh my. But no bears.

@MassyTheSassy: First off, G&T is divine. Second, I want to know if you get more chances to expand the dialog more to let us see the characters better?

@rafejudkins: We are always trying to. Lots of one-on-one scenes that didn’t get shot or didn’t make the cuts. But I’m always fighting for them. I think that’s where the characters really live or die, and our actors can always deliver when it’s just 2 people in a room talking.

@MeRavingMad: In comparison to Season One, how much queer rep is there going to be?

@rafejudkins: It depends on how many great memes you churn out.

@KyleSucksAtThis: What was the scene you dreamed of bringing alive the most, and have you filmed it yet?

@rafejudkins: That scene is in the final episode of the show.

@ghost_partea: Are the Wheel of Time’s Origins canon to the TV show or just a pretty (amazing) side piece where the stories of origins aren’t the mythology used in the show?

@rafejudkins: Canon.

About Random Things

@Jiguiski: Will there be a premiere where WoT YouTubers will be invited to ask questions? I really liked that for Season 1. It was quite unique!

@rafejudkins: I love having that! So here’s hoping.

@celticmyst08: Describe S2 using only alcoholic beverages, please.

@rafejudkins: Spiked Kaf.

@Defenestr8edCow: Are we going to hear more about Moiraine’s dog, Jenny? A few of us had some theories that there may be more to that story…

@rafejudkins: Please make @rammypark do an Origins episode about this.

@rafethompson: Can you confirm that people named Rafe from Utah are the best people?

@rafejudkins: Another Rafe? Is this real life??

@RationalNerd: Are you aware that as the second RJ writer for WoT, some parts of the fandom call you R2J2?

@rafejudkins: No. But this is my best news of the week.

@Burnt_Veggies: Hendrix or Tanqueray? Oh wait, you said WoT Season Two questions.

@rafejudkins: Gin Mare. I’m basically Spanish, you know.

And About the Best News…

@bicks236: Early S3 renewal?? [smiling face with heart-shaped eyes emoji]

@rafejudkins: Yep!! Thanks, @PrimeVideo!!
