Release Date

The news dropped in May 2023 that Season 2 of The Wheel of Time would air on Prime Video from 1 September 2023. You can find my speculative summary for the season further down this post. However, the show was officially teased with this synopsis:

“Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time, a humble farm boy, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), learns he is The Dragon Reborn – a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world… or break it.

Desperate to protect him from the Dark One, an army of powerful sorceresses must reckon with his burgeoning power and encroaching madness. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches. Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world.

In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light … or the Dark.”

Official Trailer

The official trailer came on WoT Wednesday, 19 July 2023. It featured our beloved heroes facing off against the threat of growing darkness. We see fan-favorite book characters like Elayne Trakand, Aviendha, and Lady Suroth. Our new threads in the Pattern, if you will. Watch it now…

The Wheel of Time Season 2 Preview

The Wheel of Time TV series was absent from our screens from Christmas Eve 2021 to September 2023. Season 2 ended that hiatus with an adaptation of Books 2 and 3 of Robert Jordan’s fantasy saga.

The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn share similar plot structures, so we expected significant changes to the stories, and that’s what we got. The scriptwriters modified and compressed the source material to fit 8 episodes of immersive television.

Changes were also inevitable because the first season took our characters in new directions. A faithful book series adaptation had been off the table for a long time.

Although these modifications upset an army of book purists, a dose of excitement has been injected because we can expect the unexpected. No one knows what will happen, not with this turning of the Wheel.

The Story So Far

At the end of Season 1, Rand al’Thor discovered he was the Dragon Reborn, a prophesized hero destined to save or destroy the world. He was under the protection of Moiraine Damodred, an Aes Sedai who had spent the last 20 years searching for him and who must keep him from the Shadow at all costs.

They found themselves at the Eye of the World to face the Dark One while it was still weak and not entirely free from its prison. Rand resisted evil temptations and appeared to destroy his nemesis, but Moiraine was unsure.

Rand chooses to run and find solitude in the wilderness for fear of harming his loved ones when he succumbs to madness. He can wield the One Power, and the male half of that magic is corrupted by the Dark One and drives all men who channel it insane.

The female half of the Source is safe, but Moiraine lost her magical ability at the Eye. Her Warder, Lan Mandragoran, found her in the Blight with the help of a tracking tell, but their bond was broken. Worse still, Moiraine now believed their battles against the Dark One had only begun.

Trollocs and Fades attacked the fortress city of Fal Dara, and a Darkfriend stole the fabled Horn of Valere. This ancient artifact is meant to be sounded by the Dragon Reborn at the Last Battle to summon dead heroes to fight at his side.

From across the ocean, an aggressive fleet of ships approached the mainland. Women on board used the One Power to raise a tsunami of devastation. The world was in peril.

What Might Be

With the horn lost, expect Perrin Aybara and Loial (the Ogier) to join a group of Shienarans in pursuit of the Horn of Valere. The blacksmith still feels guilty after killing his wife by mistake in a fit of rage. Hopefully, new companions can help to heal his self-loathing.

On the western coast, a fleet of ships has landed, and Seanchan invaders will look to reclaim the lands of a once mighty empire. Their customs are cruel, and they host a ferocious army to herald their Return. These invaders hate Aes Sedai almost as much as the Whitecloaks, and they treat women who can channel like pets.

The Dark One, as Moiraine fears, has yet to be beaten. Its most potent servants are now free to roam the living world with a clear motivation. They must find and deliver the Dragon Reborn to the Shadow, or if they fail, kill him.

The Pattern is weaving a vicious web around its focal points – the once-innocent villagers Rand, Mat, Perrin, Egwene, and Nynaeve. They grapple with abilities they didn’t know they had and try to find their place in an increasingly dangerous world. All paths will collide as the Wheel of Time turns, and what was, what will be, and what is may yet fall under the Shadow.

The Showrunner, Rafe Judkins

The showrunner for The Wheel of Time is Rafe Judkins, a lifelong fan of the book series and an all-around top man. He also acts as the showrunner for an adaptation of the PlayStation game God of War. Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios will produce that TV series, as they do The Wheel of Time.

Rafe Judkins is also known as a writer for Uncharted (2022) and a producer for Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D (from 2013 to 2015).

After Season 1 ended, promoting The Wheel of Time TV series continued. Panels were taken to various Comic-Cons to hype Season 2.

I reported on the show’s appearances in New York and São Paulo. Seeing the actors talking about their love for the show and its characters was great. I also broke down Rafe Judkins’ Twitter AMA after the San Diego event in 2022.
