From the Borderlands to the White Tower: New Spring’s Charming Words

The Wheel of Time thrives on its characters’ voices, inner thoughts, and pronouncements, and I’ve looked through the New Spring prequel for some of its most treasured quotes. This compact volume brims with quotable moments uttered by young Aes Sedai and the stoic Lan Mandragoran. Moiraine’s dramatic declarations are juxtaposed with Lan’s typically poetic turns of phrase and Siuan’s down-to-earth pithiness. Let’s turn the page and lose ourselves in the magic of Robert Jordan’s prose.

Upon hearing of deaths in the family, Moiraine recites a solemn prayer, her composure betraying the emptiness of her words. “The Light illumine their souls,” she says without tears, “and may they shelter in the Creator’s hand until they are born again.”

Moiraine reflects on the importance of discretion on Cairhien’s “Day of Reflection.” Her words reveal Moiraine’s cunning mind, which will become a defining trait. “Let others know you possessed a secret,” she resolves, “and some would work to learn it; that was a fact of nature.”

Moiraine Damodred (thought). New Spring, Chapter 18 – A Narrow Passage.

Signs of treachery mount, and Moiraine’s analytical mind cuts through the fog. Her astute observation hints at the complex schemes afoot. “Once was happenstance, twice might be a coincidence, but thrice or more indicated the actions of your enemies.”

Does New Spring Use the Same Opening Paragraph as The Wheel of Time?

A yellow parchment with the opening lines from New Spring.
Prose. New Spring, Chapter 1 – The Hook.

The answer is no. As well as being a prequel to the main series, New Spring is meant to be a standalone story. Therefore, this book doesn’t have the recurring opening paragraph, “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass…”.

There is still wind, though, gusting rather than rising across the bloody snow outside Tar Valon. Consider this succinct and humorously dry introduction to New Spring a nod to the iconic opening that readers of The Wheel of Time are familiar with.
