The Wheel of Time is full of beautiful quotes, whether in dialogue or prose, and I want to celebrate them on this site.

To that end, I’ve put together what I consider to be the best quotes from The Dragon Reborn. As well as reciting these inspirations, I’ll share who said what and when.

If pre-reading lines and dialogue from books may spoil your enjoyment, then what follows is spoiler content. I also add vague comments below each quote, but not in a way that overexposes the plot.

This post isn’t a standalone, as you’ll see me write similar tributes for all The Wheel of Time books. I welcome your contributions, too, so please use the comments section at the end of this post to add your favorite quotes from The Dragon Reborn. I’ll do my bit and add the best of them for you.

Best Quotes from The Dragon Reborn

In fear, fervor, and Foretelling, Robert Jordan captivates us with his use of words and drags us into his world, forever enlightened. The characters have unique voices, and their hearts pulse from the pages as we turn them.

With that in mind, I hope The Dragon Reborn quotes below will stir your imagination and edge you closer to another read, or a first read, of The Wheel of Time.

Rand al’Thor is fast and loose with prophecy in The Dragon Reborn, so it makes sense that I’ve selected a few prophetic quotes for you here.

In researching this post, I found that the third book in The Wheel of Time series has many exquisite quotes from minor characters. We hear from Juilin Sandar, Aludra (everyone’s favorite Illuminator), the Amyrlin Seat, and others.

So, let me go ahead and share a Robert Jordan masterclass in the form of his best quotes from The Dragon Reborn.

Prophetic Quotes from The Dragon Reborn

Prophetic Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “And his paths shall be many, and who shall know his name, for he shall be born among us many times, in many guises, as he has been and ever will be, time without end. His coming shall be like the sharp edge of the plow, turning our lives in furrows from out of the places where we lie in our silence. The breaker of binds; the forger of chains. The maker of futures; the unshaper of destiny.”
Prose. The Dragon Reborn, Preface.

As you will learn to expect from the preface excerpts in The Wheel of Time, the prophetic language appears to be in High Chant or the like. The Dragon Reborn is no different, and the source is Commentaries on the Prophecies of the Dragon by Jurith Dorine.

If your device can’t make out the scripture above, it reads:

“And his paths shall be many, and who shall know his name, for he shall be born among us many times, in many guises, as he has been and ever will be, time without end. His coming shall be like the sharp edge of the plow, turning our lives in furrows from out of the places where we lie in our silence. The breaker of binds; the forger of chains. The maker of futures; the unshaper of destiny.”

Prophetic Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “Blood of our blood mixed with the old blood, raised by an ancient blood not ours.”
Aviendha. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 39 – Threads in the Pattern.

Aviendha recants what the Wise Ones have said, though she doesn’t understand it entirely. All she knows is that He Who Comes With The Dawn will be found on this side of the Dragonwall. “Blood of our blood mixed with the old blood,” they told her, “raised by an ancient blood not ours.”

Prophetic Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “On the slopes of Dragonmount shall he be born, born of a maiden wedded to no man.”
Elayne Trakand. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 39 – Threads in the Pattern.

Later in the same chapter, having put two and two together, Elayne tries to remember what little she knows about the Dragon Reborn prophecies. She shares her scant knowledge with Nynaeve:

“On the slopes of Dragonmount shall he be born, born of a maiden wedded to no man.”

Prophetic Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “And it was written that no hand but his should wield the Sword held in the Stone, but he did draw it out, like fire in his hand, and his glory did burn the world. Thus did it begin. Thus do we sing his Rebirth. Thus do we sing the beginning.”
Prose. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 56 (as an epilogue) – People of the Dragon.

After the book ends, Robert Jordan gives us this piece from Do’in Toldara te, Songs of the Last Age. This is Quarto Nine: The Legend of the Dragon, composed by Boanne in the Fourth Age. I hope you’ve remembered all that. It goes:

“And it was written that no hand but his should wield the Sword held in the Stone, but he did draw it out, like fire in his hand, and his glory did burn the world. Thus did it begin. Thus do we sing his Rebirth. Thus do we sing the beginning.”

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “Always plan for the worst, child, that way all your surprises are pleasant ones.”
Verin Mathwin. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 10 – Secrets.

On hearing a nasty rumor and a threat, Egwene transgresses. Verin is livid at her actions and doesn’t discredit the information they heard entirely. “Always plan for the worst, child,” she says in response to Nynaeve, “that way all your surprises are pleasant ones.”

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “A man is the easiest animal to put on a leash, and the hardest to keep leashed. Even when he chooses it himself.”
Siuan Sanche. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 18 – Healing.

Siuan Sanche, the Amyrlin Seat, dislikes the words she has just heard from the Aes Sedai’s patient. “A man is the easiest animal to put on a leash,” she contemplates, “and the hardest to keep leashed. Even when he chooses it himself.”

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “The way back will come but once. Be steadfast.”
Sheriam Bayanar. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 22 – The Price of the Ring.

“The way back will come but once. Be steadfast.” is written 14 times (15 with a variation) during Egwene’s Testing chapter. The phrase is iconic from the second book and deserves a mention, as I missed it last time.

Of course, 12 recurrences are thoughts, and the ceremonial warning is spoken thrice. The Mistress of Novices, Sheriam Bayanar, says the lines in The Dragon Reborn.

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “During his lifetime, Jearom fought over ten thousand times, in battle and single combat. He was defeated once. By a farmer with a quarterstaff! Remember that. Remember what you just saw.”
Hammar. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 24 – Scouting and Discoveries.

Hammar, a Warder and Bladesmaster, has his trainees remember the name of the world’s greatest swordsman. This is to drive home a lesson they should learn from the extraordinary event they’ve just witnessed.

“During his lifetime,” Hammar tells them, “Jearom fought over ten thousand times, in battle and single combat. He was defeated once. By a farmer with a quarterstaff! Remember that. Remember what you just saw.”

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “You wish me to tell you all of my secrets? I am grateful, but I am not in love.”
Aludra Nendenhald. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 40 – A Hero in the Night.

I know I’m not alone in being an Aludra fanboy, and she tickles me pink when she tells an inquisitive Thom, “You wish me to tell you all of my secrets? I am grateful, but I am not in love.”

Quotes from Minor Characters in The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “He does not look so mighty lying there. He does not look so much greater than me.”
Juilin Sandar. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 54 – Into the Stone.

The thief-catcher is shocked by the dead body of a High Lord. “He does not look so mighty lying there,” he says in wonder. “He does not look so much greater than me.”

More Unique Quotes from The Dragon Reborn

Favorite Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “Just because fate has chosen something for you instead of you choosing it for yourself doesn’t mean it has to be bad.”
Min Farshaw. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 3 – News from the Plain.

Min is a fabulous pick-me-up for any forlorn ta’veran. “Just because fate has chosen something for you,” she tells Perrin, “instead of you choosing it for yourself doesn’t mean it has to be bad.”

Favorite Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “Kill a man who needs killing, and sometimes others pay for it. The question is, was it worth doing it anyway? There's always a balance, you know. Good and evil. Light and Shadow. We would not be human if there wasn't a balance.”
Thom Merrilin. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 31 – The Woman of Tanchico.

Thom is world-beaten as he laments the trouble with killing someone but touches on a central theme to The Wheel of Time.

“Kill a man who needs killing, and sometimes others pay for it. The question is, was it worth doing it anyway? There’s always a balance, you know. Good and evil. Light and Shadow. We would not be human if there wasn’t a balance.”

Best Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “Death comes to us all; we can only choose how to face it when it comes.”
Aviendha. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 38 – Maidens of the Spear.

Egwene can’t believe Aviendha’s calmness when she asks her for help. “Death comes to us all; we can only choose how to face it when it comes,” is Aviendha’s response when told it may not be possible to save someone’s life.

Best Quotes from The Dragon Reborn - a green parchment reads, “The only people I ever met who were sensible all the time were so boring that watching them could put you to sleep.”
Matrim Cauthon (thought). The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 54 – Into the Stone.

Mat is in the middle of doing something stupid and dangerous, but he shrugs it off as only he can. “The only people I ever met who were sensible all the time,” he tells himself, “were so boring that watching them could put you to sleep.”

That’s all I have for now, but what are your favorite quotes from The Dragon Reborn? Let me know in the comments.

I’ll extend this list with new finds and the best of your suggestions, so check back soon.

Where Does the Wind Rise in The Dragon Reborn?

The Dragon Reborn Quotes - a green parchment reads, “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning."
Prose. The Dragon Reborn, Chapter 1 – Waiting.

The opening paragraph of each of The Wheel of Time books begins with this ode to the Wheel. The only change is that the wind rises in different places.

However, in The Dragon Reborn, the wind rises “in the Mountains of Mist,” just as in the first book. That’s because Moiraine and her company regroup in the mountains following events at the end of The Great Hunt.
