Witty, wise, or woeful, the words of Robert Jordan are lovely to read. They’re also inspiring enough to share and enjoy, so I’ve assembled some of the best quotes from The Great Hunt in the hope they’ll please you.

My quotes from The Great Hunt will state who said what and when, and I intend to publish similar lists for all The Wheel of Time books. Feel free to contribute by using the comments section below this post.

This post has minor spoilers for The Great Hunt, as I’ll be quoting lines from the book. This includes dialogue, thoughts, and prose. There will also be a brief commentary on them, but I’ve avoided saying anything that might ruin the story.

Best Quotes from The Great Hunt

Whether in speech or thought, The Wheel of Time is enriched by quotable phrases, and I want to celebrate them on this site. I’m keen to note that The Great Hunt is not short on poignant exchanges and deep thinking, and that is reflected in this collection of thoughts and words.

I expected my favorite quotes from The Great Hunt to be more diverse due to the growing number of characters and points of view in the second book. However, at least at this stage, there seems to be a bias toward Rand al’Thor quotes and muses. I’ll try to address that as I comb through the book again.

I’ll end my introduction now and turn instead to the words of Robert Jordan. These are the best quotes from The Great Hunt:

Rand al’Thor Quotes from The Great Hunt

Rand Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “A pig painted gold is still a pig.”
Rand al’Thor. The Great Hunt, Chapter 3 – Friends and Enemies.

Rand reels off old sayings to provoke Matrim Cauthon, who has merely asserted that “an Aes Sedai’s gift is bait for a fish” and that he doesn’t want to “put the hook in his mouth.”

“A pig painted gold is still a pig,” is one of Rand’s retorts.

Rand Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “Always something new, always something I didn’t expect, and sometimes it isn’t horrible.”
Rand al’Thor (thought). The Great Hunt, Chapter 15 – Kinslayer.

Rand wonders at Ogier tree singing, an extraordinary talent bestowed on Loial. “Always something new, always something I didn’t expect,” he muses, “and sometimes it isn’t horrible.”

Rand Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “Lan said the time to sound most sure was when you were least certain.”
Rand al’Thor (thought). The Great Hunt, Chapter 19 – Beneath the Dagger.

The sheepherder tries to reassure himself, as much as his companions, when they retrieve a dangerous knife. “Lan said the time to sound most sure was when you were least certain,” he recalls.

Rand Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “No man can walk so long in the Shadow that he cannot come again to the Light.”
Rand al’Thor (thought). The Great Hunt, Chapter 46 – To Come Out of the Shadow.

Rand is upset and conflicted but finds comfort in these words of redemption. “No man can walk so long in the Shadow,” he reminds himself, “that he cannot come again to the Light.”

Reflective Quotes from The Great Hunt

Reflective Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “There is one rule, above all others, for being a man. Whatever comes, face it on your feet.”
Lan Mandragoran. The Great Hunt, Chapter 7 – Blood Calls Blood.

Lan offers Rand some words of wisdom as the boy nervously answers a summons from the Amyrlin Seat. “There is one rule, above all others, for being a man,” he tells the boy, “whatever comes, face it on your feet.”

Reflective Quotes from The Great Hunt - a brown parchment reads “Knowing serves no real purpose, but then, neither does not knowing. Myself, I always prefer knowing to not.”
Verin Mathwin. The Great Hunt, Chapter 12 – Woven in the Pattern.

Verin reflects on knowledge as she instructs Egwene in using the One Power. She believes Moiraine only shares what she must, and Verin intends to help Egwene control her magic.

“Knowing serves no real purpose,” the Brown Sister says thoughtfully, “but then, neither does not knowing. Myself, I always prefer knowing to not.”

The Shienaran Prayer for the Dead

The Shienaran Prayer for the Dead - a brown parchment reads “The Light shine on you, and the Creator shelter you. The last embrace of the mother welcome you home.”
Ingtar Shinowa. The Great Hunt, Chapter 10 – The Hunt Begins.

Loial quotes this verse initially as he explains Shienaran burial customs to Rand. These are the solitary words of farewell that Ingtar says for two dead soldiers they have found:

“The Light shine on you, and the Creator shelter you. The last embrace of the mother welcome you home.”

What are your favorite quotes from The Great Hunt? Please let me know in the comments section. My selection is unforgivably short, so I’ll add the best of yours to this post and more of my own.

Where Does the Wind Rise in The Great Hunt?

The Great Hunt Quotes - a brown parchment reads “The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of Dhoom. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning."
Prose. The Great Hunt, Chapter 1 – The Flame of Tar Valon.

These words open every book in The Wheel of Time’s main series with only a change in the wind’s course. In The Great Hunt, it “rose in the Mountains of Dhoom,” a range of mountains south of Shayol Ghul and the Blasted Lands.
