Winter's Heart paperback, Orbit's September 2021 edition. The cover depicts a snow covered mountain and the tops of trees.

It’s time to open the Winter’s Heart paperback and enjoy another foray into the world of The Wheel of Time. This ninth installment of Robert Jordan’s fantasy series is about facing down rebels, traitors, and Darkfriends. The bonds of love and friendship are needed more than ever as all three ta’veran – Rand, Perrin, and the returning Mat Cauthon – find themselves in quagmires of trouble.

The book has a grandstand finish that leaves a lasting impression and is a fine read if you’re becoming impatient for the Last Battle to start. Don’t wish these middle books away, though, because Robert Jordan continues to expand and embellish the world with fascinating stories.

About Winter’s Heart

Winter’s Heart was written by Robert Jordan and is the ninth novel in his bestselling fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. Rand hunts down traitors, Elayne defends her claim to the Lion Throne, Perrin discovers his wife’s predicament, and Mat prepares a heroic escape from Ebou Dar. Confrontations in a city where men cannot channel, long-awaited revelations, and a combustible finish are highlights of this compelling drama, first published in 2000.

Rand is prepared to take devastating action to stop his Asha’man from becoming raving dogs of madness. Moridin decides the Dragon Reborn must be killed, while Padan Fain has always had that notion. Min, Nynaeve, and Cadsuane aim to keep Rand alive… and sane.

Elayne and Aviendha become first sisters, Faile, Alliandre, and Morgase are taken as gai’shan by Sevanna, the Oath Rod is used forcefully, and Mat faces his destiny. All this makes Winter’s Heart a cracking read that is grossly underrated.

Reading Age

Winter’s Heart is a terrific book for anyone aged 14 to 17, and fantasy enthusiasts worldwide are still reading it well into their 40s. By this stage, you need to read the series up to this point to understand the many subplots.

Reading Order

Winter’s Heart follows The Path of Daggers in the main series, and you should read it before tackling Crossroads of Twilight, the tenth installment.

Book Spiel (Spanish Edition)

El Corazón Del Invierno, the Spanish edition of Winter’s Heart, uses this eye-opening book spiel, translated for your enjoyment:

“After the attack on the Sun Palace, Rand travels with Min, leaving false trails for his enemies. In Cairhien, Cadsuane continues to prepare the strategy for the Last Battle.

Perrin organizes the rescue of Faile, who is a prisoner of Sevanna’s sept, and in Tar Valon, the intrigues of the White Tower continue. The Seanchan have conquered Ebou Dar, and Mat is trapped there, along with his companions. Rand heads to Far Madding, the city where the Power has no effect. There he hopes to confront the renegade Asha’man, a condition he considers necessary to cleanse the Saidin of the Dark One’s taint.”
