A Hallowed Book: Knife of Dreams Paperbacks

Knife of Dreams paperback, Orbit's September 2021 edition. The cover depicts snow-tipped mountains and a silvery sky.

The Knife of Dreams paperback is a splendidly thick brick of a book, and the writing is as strong as its mass. It needs to be, as it involves The Wheel of Time’s many moving parts heading inevitably towards the Last Battle, a heavy task for any author.

Knife of Dreams was Robert Jordan’s last completed novel in The Wheel of Time book series. He died from cardiac amyloidosis in 2007, having intended that Knife of Dreams would be the penultimate book. It’s unlikely that would have been the case if time had been kinder, but The Wheel of Time did get finished.

Robert Jordan left a ton of written material and notes, which made it possible for Brandon Sanderson to complete the story. He accomplished this in three more tomes. Knife of Dreams didn’t turn out to be the ending, but it was an ending of sorts. It is a hallowed book, and I treasure it in memory of Robert Jordan. I hope you come to love it too.

I intend to unite you with your favorite paperback edition in this post. I’ll give you a quick brief about Knife of Dreams and share the book spiel before looking at 5 different retailers where you can buy the book today.

About Knife of Dreams

Knife of Dreams was written by Robert Jordan and is the eleventh novel in his immersive fantasy series, The Wheel of Time. It was first published in 2005.

Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, considers extending a hand of peace to the Seanchan. As the Last Battle approaches, he strives to avoid the chaos and disaster of warring with them. However, the descendants of Artur Hawkwing’s empire are imploding, creating the perfect storm for a Forsaken to spring their trap.

Perrin Aybara is consumed by his rescue mission. His wife remains captive, and to free her, he must form an unholy alliance, hoping he is not betrayed. Meanwhile, Mat Cauthon continues to court the Daughter of the Nine Moons, recognizing that his life depends on their union. Yet Tuon has other concerns after discovering that her Imperial family has been murdered. As Mat might say, it is time to toss the dice.

Reading Age

The Wheel of Time series is best read as a teenager, but most are older by the time they finish it. The books grow with the reader, and fantasy fans of any age can enjoy Knife of Dreams.

Reading Order

Knife of Dreams comes after Crossroads of Twilight in the main series, and you want this one under your belt before reading The Gathering Storm, which is next.

Book Spiel (Spanish Edition)

Cuchillo De Sueños, the Spanish edition of Knife of Dreams, uses this entertaining book spiel, translated for your enjoyment:

“While the fabric of reality becomes unstable, everything indicates that Tarmon Gai’don is near and that Rand al’Thor must prepare for the confrontation with the Dark One. But first, he must negotiate a truce with the Seanchan. Perrin, for his part, has already made a pact with them and is willing to do anything to save his wife from the Shaido.

Everything is subject to continuous change as the established powers falter… In Caemlyn, Elayne fights to obtain the Lion Throne while trying to prevent a civil war, and Egwene discovers that even the White Tower has ceased to be a safe place.

Rand and his companions must stand firm against the adversities of fate, or the Dark One will prevail, and the world will be lost.”

The cover for this trade paperback edition of Knife of Dreams has a mountain range with snowy peaks and what I discern as water in the foreground rather than a muddy plain. My unsubstantiated guess is that these are the Black Hills, which run to the west of Dragonmount, so it would make the waterway the River Luan.
